A Note from Sabrina |
Sabrina's walk for smiles is a very important organization to me because I was in the hospital when I was diagnosed with a bladder infection that spread to my kidney. I don't remember much, since it was 7 years ago but what I do remember is McMaster helping me so much and making me and my family feel comfortable at the hospital. When I got out of the hospital after being in there for a week, I knew I wanted to help the hospital raise more money so that they could help other children feel comfortable. My mother helped out with the Mother's day Telethon and that's what I wanted to do. Since I was only six they told me I was too young so I thought of a different way when I was seven years old, and that was to start a walk-a-thon. My mom agreed and let me get in touch with the foundation, which I did and then that year in April we started Sabrina's walk for Smiles. We raised $5,000, which was a HUGE accomplishment for a seven year old. In total to this day I have raised $42,000, in five years. Last January I was honored to win "youth volunteer of the year" and for that I am very grateful and thankful. I am very committed and proud to be one of the main organizers of Sabrina's walk for smiles and hope that after reading this that you will get in touch with someone in the walk and join the walk-a-thon to help kids. Without all of the volunteers that work long hours to help the walk and all of the participants that come out in all conditions of the weather we couldn't run the walk. I am very proud to have such a big accomplishment at the age of 12. |
